- World Honey Bee Day is on the third Saturday in August and brings a buzzing celebration for beekeepers, honey lovers, and all things blooming.
- Many home addresses feature bee related names. There are a buzzworthy 498 roads across the country that contain the word ‘Honey’.
- World Honey Bee Day began in 2009, quickly bringing awareness to the benefits and environmental needs of honey bees. There are estimated to be over 270,000 hives in the UK – equivalent to one for every 100 UK households.

Unfortunately, we do not come out too well against our nearest neighbours.
In the UK there are 27,000,000 households and 270,000 beehives, that’s 1 beehive for every 100 households.
While in Germany there are 41,000,000 housholds and 870,000 beehives, that’s 1 beehive for every 47 households.
In France there are 31 million households and 1,300,000 beehives, that’s 1 beehive for every 24 households.
Harlow definitely doing it’s ‘Honey I’m home’ bit
What has been apparent this summer is the amount of wild flower beds Harlow council have sown.
They have been, and still are, amazing…
As Jukes Estate Agents co owners Lee Venables and Geoff Flewers have driven around Harlow this summer, they have both praised the council for this. “Hat’s off to Harlow Council” said Lee. “They look lovely”. “I agree” added Geoff. “Looking after bees is vitally important. Wild flower beds are fabulous habitat for our striped friends”.
There is no doubt looking after bees is important.

During a bee’s lifetime, do you know how much honey a bee makes in it’s life?
Although most people think they make a lot, the answer is quite astounding!
During a bee’s lifetime, a bee will make a 1/12 (one twelfth) of a teaspoon of honey.
Therefore it takes 12 bees to make 1 teaspoon of honey! So, you can see how many bees there needs to be.
In addition to this, they only live around 36 days in peak summer, to 3 -4 months in winter.
