Punnets versus Property

Punnets versus Property:

  • The 136th Wimbledon Championship is underway. The All England Club is set to host around 800 players, 679 matches and over half a million spectators before its conclusion on Sunday 16th July.
  • Each year at the Championships around £500,000 is spent by spectators tucking into delicious English strawberries and cream. Close to 200,000 portions are sold at £2.50 per portion.
  • The price of a portion of strawberries and cream has remained unchanged since 2010. In contrast, the average price of a property in the UK has increased by 54% over the same period.
  • Back in 2010 the average price of a property was just over £171,000. Only one in every 20 properties sold for in excess of £500,000. In the past year more than one in every six properties sold has had a price tag in excess of £500,000. An in-depth look

Yes, it’s that time of the year again, Wimbledon!

At the time of writing this (08.07.23) all the British men are out. Katie Boulter remains the only lady left! Somethings rarely change!

Whilst somethings rarely change, we thought it remarkable to find out that the price of strawberries have not increased over the last 13 years at Wimbledon. Just imagine how expensive they were back then!

Property prices however, are a different kettle of fish (or punnet of strawberries). The national average for property prices 2010 – 2023 has increased by a whopping 54%.

Regional prices.

Herts and Essex are in the East of England region. Since 2010 property has increased a massive 74% (£196,000 – £342,000).

Harlow prices.

Harlow has done even better with an outstanding 82% increase (£178,000 – £324,000).

So if Wimbledon strawberries had kept on track with Harlow properties, they would cost cost you £4.55 at this year’s tournament!
